While I finish up my reports on Day 6, I thought I'd share a passage from one of my favorite writers, on healing. Enjoy! "It seems to me that almost all our sadnesses are moments of tension, which we feel as paralysis because we no longer hear our astonished emotions living. Because we are alone with the unfamiliar presence that has entered us; because everything we trust and are used to is for a moment taken away from us; because we stand in the midst of a transition where we cannot remain standing. That is why the sadness passes: the new presence inside us, the presence that has been added, has entered our heart, has gone into its innermost chamber and is no longer even there, - is already in our bloodstream. And we don't know what it was. We could easily be made to believe that nothing happened, and yet we have changed, as a house that a guest has entered changes. We can't say who has come, perhaps we will never know, but many signs indicate that the future enters us in this way in order to be transformed in us, long before it happens. And that is why it is so important to be solitary and attentive when one is sad: because the seemingly uneventful and motionless moment when our future steps into us is so much closer to life than that other loud and accidental point of time when it happens to us as if from outside. [gallery] May is Women's Health Month. It's also my birthday month, which I will refer to hereafter as Scheherapalooza. If you're a facebook follower, you'll find the birthday celebration chronicled there. You also know that I've been trying to track my Cigarette Free Days there. I figured that I'd start to chronicle the rest of my journey here, along with my other missives toward my ongoing mission of creating habits of happiness, and health. I've smoked off and on for about 12 years now. Seems like the onset of my habit came right along the time my then most serious heartbreak occurred. I found my fiance to be a cheater, and to be expecting a child, 10 months before our planned wedding date. My world turned upside down, my soul split in two, and grabbing a cigarette seemed like the thing to do. After all, that's what I'd seen my mother, aunts, and various women go for the pack under duress. (By the way, I'm interested in finding out what about me, attracts men who cheat on me...stay tuned for THAT story) I also watched my mother die of lung cancer. One of the most painfully drawn out processes ever to be witnessed. Interestingly, rather than immediately toss my pack and commit to a smoke free life, I delved deeper into the habit. Go figure. I celebrated my 35th birthday just last week, and decided to give myself the gift of health. I made the decision that, in light of the reality that my marriage had a 90% chance of ending in divorce and all of the stress that accompanies that-- (studies report that divorce causes more stress than any other single event, with the exception of the death of a spouse)-- I deserve to be healthy, happy, and strong. I made the decision to go at it Cold Turkey, which, I wouldn't necessarily recommend to those for whom smoking is an addiction. Because I can go days without smoking, and will refrain from smoking when in the company of non-smokers, I've deduced that what I have is a bad habit. A poor coping mechanism, rather than an addiction. That said...what does Day 5 feel like? Well... feels pretty okay, until I'm faced with a stressful situation. That's when I most crave a smoke. I FEEL the location of the stress in my body...a whirl of discomfort in my gut. I don't like it. I understand in the absence of smoking, that the smoking numbed this feeling. In The Ultimate Happiness Prescription, Deepak Chopra explains that if you are "with" your feelings, that you can actually differentiate them...say, fear from anger, based on where they lie physically. Chopra says that anger is felt in the gut...Which makes perfect sense. Every time I think of my marriage, my husband the whole she-bang...I get sick to my stomach. Of course I'm angry. Cig Free – Day Six

I think I’m hungry, which is something that I’m looking forward to. I’m not sure whether the lack of appetite is due to my marriage going through it’s transition, or due to my quit smoking missive. What I’ve noticed thus far is that I’m much thirstier. My throat feels dry more often, and I have this hack, which produces a wonderful ick of something that’s surely better out than in. Either way…At 98lbs. (which is 5 lbs. lighter than my pre-pregnancy weight) I’m looking for ways to get my weight up. I’ve asked some nutritional guru connects that I’ve acquired through the facebook and twitter, with no response. I really need to re-connect with my very good friend, the ProMomBlogger for a refresher on e-etiquette. Maybe, “Hi. I’m terribly underweight, and am wondering if you have any advice or resources that would be beneficial to my goal of reaching a healthy weight” isn’t the way to approach the matter. That said, I’m grateful that my appetite has returned. So very happy to be excited about food again, and wondering what yummy goodness I’m gonna eat today!

So. I'm a third of the way towards a new habit. Seven days in. Here's the report: Today, I'm angry. I found out today that my electricity has been off since May 6. This means that when I get home, I'll have a refrigerator, and deep freezer's worth of food, to throw away. And even without the biggest or healthiest appetite, this manner of waste pisses me off. I'd like to see this (which my husband calls a mistake) as utter irresponsibility. As in, if he wasn't so busy trying to cover up his mess, he could have remembered to change the auto pay information...or, His family clearly isn't as important to him as the mess that he's doggedly protecting...or, The health and welfare of his family isn't important to him...or, or...or...or I could go on for waaay to long with all of these scenarios that make my husband out to be a villainous ogre...really, I could. Question is: How does making my husband the bad guy support my health and happiness? Don't worry. I'll wait... ...okay. Let's take husband out of the equation. How does making someone out to be the bad guy support my health and happiness? Truth is, it doesn't. In fact, making the Mister out to be the bad guy puts me in "What's Wrong With Me" thinking. What's that? It's the train of thought that makes me... ...wonder what it is that I've done to deserve this kind of treatment... ...beat up on myself for not having better decision making skills... ...doubt myself and my abilities to make sound decisions- "how could I have missed that" Fact is, there are always three sides to a story. Theirs, yours, and the truth. You've read mine. We don't know theirs. Here's the truth: The electricity was turned off, because the bill was neglected. As I sit here, typing this, my electricity is probably restored. When I paid the bill, I was told that it could take up to 24 hours. When I get home, I will have to throw away all of the perishable and frozen food. And after writing this, I am less pissed, and one week cigarette free!

I'm having a hard time. I feel like music itself, is conspiring against me, with the aim of putting every detail of my relationship business in the street. The Playlist for the last 30 mins: Kem - Missin Your Love Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam - All Cried Out The Supremes - Where Did Our Love Go Floetry - Now That You're Gone. Just before I hurled my Ipod across the room, I read a chapter in Susan Piver's "The Wisdom of a Broken Heart", entitled "Yes, You Have Lost Your Mind" (But it's Okay). The inability to focus on things that I want to focus on. The complete overtaking of my thoughts waking and sleeping. The "who is this woman parading around, calling herself me". All Okay??? Everything I look at, hear, taste...reminds me of the loss of my happily ever after. I feel crazy most of the time. Like I don't have control over my own self. This level of absolute hopelessness, reminds me of watching my mother fight a slow, painful fight with cancer. Finally. Someone who gets it. And doesn't make me feel weak or stupid or trapped in some juvenile fairy tale love because of it. Relief... Thanks Susan Grab some wisdom for yourself here:

So I'm back in Michigan. Absolutely drained from my return which began at roughly 3:45 this morning and included extra baggage fees, and a three year old, who was bright eyed and bushy tailed, right up until it was time to board the second flight, I'm glad to be back home. What do women really want?? Hell if they know. I’m saying it. One ofthe biggest problems with today’s relationships... ...is women. Yes,you. I asked over 125 women two simple questions: What is a man’s responsibility in a relationship, and What do you want from a man in a relationship. Want to see what these women said? ... don’t worry...I’ll wait. That’s right. Thesewomen on Twitter and the “Unhappily Married” social media groups, the ones thatare so quick to tell the world what’s wrong with their man, seemingly, don’teven know what it is that they want from their man...or any man for thatmatter. That’s what the answers show. We’re mad though. We’re mad because our men aren’t what we want them to be...aren’t doing what we want them to do... Here’s a thought: How can our men deliver on something, if they don’t know what they’re supposed to be delivering?? Sure, we can say what men are “supposed” to know. My question is, How? Further, why would you leave your happiness to an assumption? Isn’t your happiness worth the effort of knowing what it is, and what is needed to keep it? I invite you to take 10 minutes, and think about what it is you actually want of your man. Be specific. For instance, if you say, “I want him to be considerate”--dig deeper. What does considerate look like? What would your man have to do, in order for you to say, “wow, he’s really considerate”. You may just find that what you're looking for, is already there. Busted…NOT!

For those of us going through transition, I'd like to share a story: For my fifth anniversary, instead of some lovely mahogany table, or picture frame, I was informed that my marriage, was over. My husband told me that he was in fact leaving me, and that he just hadn't figured out how, or when. ...and that he just needed me to be patient with him while he figured that out. The next couple of months were bad. Very, very bad. Lots of tears, snot and other bodily fluids...I'll spare you. I went to Texas to get away from the madness which was my life, and to spend some time with my sister. It was a good time overall, but there was this one night, that was bad. Really, bad. There was wine, kleenex and tears. Loooots of tears. Upon waking the following morning, in beautiful Texas, I couldn't help but notice the boxer (who, by the looks of things, lost) staring back at me in the mirror. I thought: The. Horror. (followed by,) Just because the marriage that I once had is over, does not mean that I've got to be busted. Period.

busted (adj.) - unkempt, slovenly. An appearance giving the impression of apathy.

This, is where Twitter comes in handy. I asked a simple question -

Is there a Divorce Proof Mascara you recommend?

Here's what I got: Oh, by the way, let me be perfectly clear here. There is no mascara on the market, which will prevent divorce. By "divorce proof", I mean a mascara that can stand up to a divorce, and all of the tears that come with it. So. Here's what I got:

"L'Oreal Voluminous Waterproof mascara is a favorite...Apply pressed powder under the eye to keep the mascara from traveling."

For less than 10 bucks, I found this mascara to hold up to the tear jerkers: Weddings, proms, interviews with talk show hosts, and most romantic movies. Bottom line: If you're trying to figure out how to not to frighten your children's teachers, bank tellers, or anyone else you may bump into in public, go grab a tube. As if there isn't enough to think about: Last year, Professors Tim Spector and Andrea Virginia Burra, part of the King London College research team found inconclusive evidence stating that the 'elusive' G-spot erogenous zone may be a myth encouraged by magazines and sex therapists. After what is the largest study to date, including 1,800 women, no proof has been found to substantiate the bump of ecstatic pleasure. I wonder how much this study costs, and how better those funds could have been appropriated... Aren't there other medical issues of pressing urgency?? No I don't. I wonder what's the fuss?? What's with the whole Scientific Theory of it all? What, exactly, are you studying? I mean, I say that the blessed Grafengerg Spot does, in fact, exist, and I have one to prove it. ...stays in Frankenmuth. We get to the Expo early. A good parking spot. We even have time to harass the parking attendants, and their parents. Yes, their parents. As it turns out, this is the third year that they've volunteered for the Expo. "What brings you to the Expo?" asks dad. "It's Scheherapalooza, and we were on the way to Traverse City, and saw the sign, and decided to check it out." Following the what's-Scheherapalooza-it's my birthday celebration-we're going to Traverse City to celebrate- conversation, mom says, "Oh, I love to celebrate," and perked up at least two inches. "Me and my girlfriends get together and celebrate Christmas every March. It's clear that celebrate, uttered over the tops of her eyeglasses, was code for, well... Anyway. Let's just say that we learned a WHOLE new way to look at celebration. In line at the Expo, you can feel the excitement in the air. You've got your hipsters, oldsters, charmers, lederhosen-ers, and we like beer-ers, two redheads, and a brunette. Everyone's mission was the same.

Have fun.

And fun. We. Had. That's really all I can say. Aside of me haughking a loogie during the strongman contest, in which (I am proud to say) I outlasted longer the big burly guys to my left and right who declared that they couldn't lose to a girl, (Are we still having THAT argument??) Higher IPA numbers indicate more citrusey notes in your beer, like Two Hearted Ale. The banana-ey taste of the Leffe Blonde is because of the high yeast content. Oberon, brews twice a year. Fall and Spring. Michigan has a ton of breweries. There is blueberry beer. Detroit's Atwater Brewery has tasty brews. My favorites were Vanilla Java Porter, and the Dirty Blonde. I like wheats. We got a police escort from the Beer Expo to the afterparty (with lights and all)... ...and to our hotel when the afterparty was over. No Cigarettes...Not even the urge. Yeah...aside of that...I can only say that this is the most unspeakable weekend in the history of words. And, thanks, Jim. If you're planning to be in Michigan next May, meet me at the World Expo of Beer! I'll be there!

But hey...I've never been to the Upper Peninsula. Never crossed the Mackinac Bridge... Made it to the top of Castle Rock. Yet another first.

My clients usually report “not having enough time” as their reason for not practicing Self Care. That, and money. I show them how spending time on them is totally affordable, and how it can increase their time and energy, so that they can tackle their day to day responsibilities with greater ease. So, whether you have one hour, or one minute, a million bucks or a dollar, you’re sure to find something here that will usher you along your way to Self Care. If you already do these things, congratulations! Spread the word.

IF YOU HAVE:

1 hour?

Pick up a book.

Turn off your phone and computers, iPads and turn on your mind. Reading reduces stress and tension by allowing the mind to shift gears from high intensity to relaxation and enjoyment. Reading also improves your memory, vocabulary, and knowledge base. And reading won’t break the bank. If you don’t want to spend $30 bucks on a book, take a visit to your local library.

Take a nap.

I don’t know about you; it takes time for me to unwind into a comfortable nap. Some people say all you need is twenty minutes for a good nap. I say that’s true. I also say give yourself some time to settle into the nap, so that you get a full twenty minutes, and you have the time to prepare for whatever’s next!

30 mins?

Have a beer. You know that a beer can take the edge off a stressful day. Did you know that there were health benefits too?

Don’t like beer? Try wine. Both beer and wine have antioxidants, and reduce stroke.

*Note: Responsibility is key. One beer or one glass of wine daily, is considered moderate. More than that and you risk health issues.

Get an HIV test.

Planned Parenthood offers a rapid HIV test that is quick, easy and painless. You collect your specimen, and twenty minutes later, you know your status. What better way to say that your health is important to you, and those you love?

15 minutes?

Make and enjoy a cup of tea.

There’s a tea for just about everything! From headaches, sore throats, and stress to joint health, and even lactation (sorry guys). Pick a tea. Any tea. Want to relax? There’s a tea for that. Cozy up with your favorite mug and enjoy!

Solve a puzzle.

Solving puzzles like Soduku and playing word games like crosswords, word searches or cryptograms seem like a waste of time. Fact is, you can receive many of the benefits of reading, by taking a crack at a game. Besides, they’re fun, and works the frontal lobe, which controls decision making, problem solving, and emotions.

5 mins.?

Take five full minutes to fully moisturize after your shower.

Using light pressure and circular motion, your skin and muscles benefit from a nice massage. Your skin will thank you, by looking and feeling healthy.

Drink 16oz. of water.

Water keeps your system in order. It also keeps your skin healthy *and* improves your sex life. Have a drink. Cheers!

1 min. or less?

Use a condom.

With the rise of sexually transmitted infections and diseases, it just makes sense. If it takes longer than a minute to put on a condom, you need more practice ;-).

Laugh.

Laughing releases endorphins our body’s natural pain and stress reliever. Laughing also reduces cortisol, can boost immunity, and even give a quick burst of energy.

Do something for yourself. It only takes a minute.

Day 21. End of an error...

Welp. Day 21. A new habit has been born! I'm feeling good, smelling better, and my days seem more productive. I get cravings every now and again, like...after a really satisfying meal, (which, I'm having more of, by the by) or having drinks with friends.

But I'm human. Hey. It's been 21 days. I'm pretty damned pleased with myself. Now, for the stress management substitute.

Yoga. Bikram style.

I'm sitting next to the wife of an Asian couple. Young newlyweds. Four months in. Her ring is absolutely stunning. They live in Clinton Township. They may move to Portland, Oregon. The husband, had an interview there which is why we're sitting next to each other now. She can't stop looking at her ring. That's how I know she's newly-wed. That, and the ring is so sparkly. She can't stop looking at her ring. I can't either. I remember when I was a newlywed. It wasn't that long ago. I think they'll last. Maybe because they're Asian, and I assume that Asians are more level headed than I will ever be. Maybe because she's not me, and he, isn't my ex-husband. But she *is* me. All us brides are. We all hope, ultimately, that out marriage remain as beautiful and sparkly as our rings.

After all, this entire post could just be another one of those don't-feel-bad- because-you're-alone, or better yet, the you're-not alone-because-I'm-alone- on-Valentine's-Day-too, posts. Then again, it could be another way of looking at thoughtful, or considerate; hell, maybe even love. Couples: Giving each other the space to just be, shows that you respect your partner’s individuality, and while you may not understand it, you recognize that your partner has the need to decompress, and honor whatever that looks like.
